I would hazard that, maybe, one in ten of those people in their ironically striped sweaters with their giant headphones actually care about and notice the difference in sound quality. Many more of them will tell you that they do. They are lying.
Yes, tiny headphones are super annoying and don't stay in your ears and have pretty lousy sound quality as a rule. There are solutions to this that do not take you back to a 1980s stereo ad.
You don't look musical. You look like a poseur. Because you are one.

Probably wear earphones that are properly proportioned to the size of our heads?
The giant headphones are particularly ridiculous when they are connected to an Ipod Shuffle with literally 10 feet of cable. (I'm looking at you girl in Washington Square Park on wednesday.)
Because they're old and those headphones were built to work forever. There needs to be someone going around confiscating old technology that gets taken out in public: cassette walkmans, CD walkmans, big headphones, those radio/headphone combos from hell, point-and-shoot cameras that use film, etc...
I only wear my big headphones in lab. Look too goofy to wander around outside with them on.
And yes, I bought them because I care about the sound quality :)
Wow, why would anyone even care about headphones at all like that? How can hate headphones so much just because they are old? That is so lame. I personally like large headphones, I like that they are more comfortable than those tiny earbuds, and I like the sound quality. I also like the look of them. I like polaroid cameras and walkmans too. What's wrong with that? What's wrong with liking something that's old and has value? Like the 1930's cathedral radios? I want one of those for christmas! I can't believe some of the people out there who are so biased against something so small as heaphones. Why should it matter? You shouldn't complain about what other people do with their lives. It's their life, and your just making yours worse by sitting there whining about it.
I wear giant headphones that go over-the-ear because my ear cannals are shaped wierd and the little in-the-ear things cause actual pain.
