Why are gentlemen wearing suits without ties?

(As usual, I use "gentleman" advisedly.)

Stop.  Suits need ties.  If you're not going to wear a tie, don't wear a suit.  Or wear an ascot.  Or a sweater vest, but only to football games.

It does not look charmingly relaxed.  It looks slovenly.
